steam rises

blueberry pancakes

smothered in

melted butter

powdery snow

coats the streets

erases delineations

where someone

fell in & out

of love

warmth envelopes

cluttered kitchen

counters covered

in unpaid bills

checklists on

laboring refrigerators

a child’s fingerprint

drawing

two hours a landlord

will inform each

unit of rent

increases

for now, the heat

stays low, pancakes

grow cold, once-

lovers discuss

how to split

the water bill

and a child

stares at the

ceiling dreaming

of a permanent

home
